This project is a catharsis for me. Why? Hunting has become the thing, other than my family, that I think about the most. It’s what drives me on a daily basis. It has enriched my life beyond my own understanding.
It’s because of this developing obsession that I often come across philosophical and ideological questions that I struggle to answer. For the same reasons, I often call into question the actions of other hunters as though they represent my own.
I say all this to explain that my current relationship with hunting and hunters is complicated. I love both, but there are many facets of the pursuit and the community that I don’t love. And for this thing we call hunting to continue I think it’s key that we examine the positive and negative impacts, how we can enhance the former and work to eliminate the latter.
The way to do that, in my view, is to promote robust conversation about the issues that matter and at the same time work to educate each other about key ideas like conservation, our value systems and how to construct a better public image. An informed and open discourse is a damn good way to fix what ails hunting and highlight the many amazing people that take part.
So, I hope you enjoy my catharsis, an activity designed as a dialogue that will help answer many of the questions and issues I have…that hopefully reflect yours. The Hunting Collective is about coming together around the idea that we are privileged to hunt and want to share the experience with the rest of the world.
